Winnipeg Trails Association Project:

Through the support of Rivers West, the Winnipeg Trails Association has been able to leverage over $20,000,000 in trail and greenway development in Winnipeg. Along with trail development, the Winnipeg Trails Association produced an international award winning trail signage program for Winnipeg's urban trail system and is in the process of developing a trailhead system for the trails. Multiple educations and awareness events with international guest speakers have also been held increasing the awareness of the many benefits trails and greenways offer the community. The Winnipeg Trails Association has been instrumental in the development of trail linkages entering / departing the north and south ends of the City of Winnipeg alongside the Red River.   www.WinnipegTrails.com

Ecole St. Avila / Pembina Trails School Division Project

Rivers West is collaborating with Ecole St. Avila and the Pembina Trails School Division in the development of a first of-its- kind-initiative on a school ground site. Ecole St. Avila is developing a bioretention system to handle treatment of storm water runoff. The bioretention system will offer far more opportunities than the traditional underground approach to solving the school ground’s drainage issues by offering
  • An innovative approach to an endemic Manitoba situation,
  • Educational opportunities in every grade curriculum,
  • Broader outreach opportunities into the community as a whole,
  • Presenting a sustainability alternative,
  • A far more environmentally conscious approach,
  • And by developing a socially responsible solution.

The bioretention system will consist of a bioswale and raingarden to retain, channel and cleanse stormwater runoff. An underdrain and overflow feature will channel cleansed runoff into the City’s stormwater system. The bioswale and raingarden not only will address the drainage issue in ways listed above, it fits with the planned features of the play ground re-development plan. Multiple partners are involved in this project.

PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - June 28, 2010

Rod Bruinooge, MP Announces Environment Canada Funding for INNOVATIVE ENVIRONMENTAL DRAINAGE PROJECT

Winnipeg, Manitoba – Rod Bruinooge, MP for Winnipeg South, on behalf of Canada's Environment Minister, the Honourable Jim Prentice, today announced Lake Water Basin Stewardship funding for an environmental drainage project in Winnipeg South.

Environment Canada is investing an additional $ 46,014 to support Down the Drain - A Demonstration Landscape; Using Plants and Natural Systems to Clean our Water  through the Lake Winnipeg Basic Stewardship Fund . This is on top of $76,499 of federal funds already invested through Recreational Infrastructure Canada. The total project value is $426,614.

"It is exciting to see the community come together to make this project happen,” said MP Bruinooge. “The federal government is pleased to support a worthwhile project such as Down the Drain because it directly addresses environmental concerns such as the water quality in Lake Winnipeg."

"We are proud to support community groups in the Winnipeg as well as across Manitoba willing to take concrete action through on-the-ground environmental projects that will achieve a more sustainable Canada," said Minister Prentice.

The Down the Drain project makes critical improvements to the drainage of recreational grounds used by the Richmond Kings Community Centre, École St. Avila school and the surrounding community in an innovative and environment-friendly manner.  Rivers West Red River Corridor Inc., a not for profit organization works with stakeholders and citizens to promote and sustain the cultural, heritage, natural and recreational values of the Red River in the Lake Winnipeg Watershed.

"We are thrilled to be working in partnership with Ecole St. Avila and so many notable organizations who are focused on water conservation. Ecole St. Avila's rain garden project is a very innovative and ecological approach to drainage. In addition to supporting construction of the rain garden, we look forward to developing bilingual rain garden educational resources for students, teachers and the community," said Penny McMillan, Chair, Rivers West - Red River Corridor Inc.

The bioretention system being developed in the design of a raingarden will reduce nutrient loading to the Lake Winnipeg watershed. Visitors will be able to observe and learn about the technology used and the benefits it brings to the Lake Winnipeg watershed.

As a first-in-Winnipeg project, this site will serve as an excellent example for replication of technology on other properties.

Work is expected to begin immediately and be completed by the end of November 2010.

  • Hosted four open houses where information on the nomination was provided to the public.
  • Prepared material for distribution to the public summarizing the process and what the designation means.
